Church Mügeln Mügeln is a small town on the border of the Lommatzscher Pflege. It gained importance in the 16th century as a bishop's seat in the diocese of Meißen. Mügeln has several shops and supermarkets. The municipal outdoor swimming pool is open during the summer time.
The town was a centre of the Saxon narrow gauge railway network in the 19th century. The train "Wilder Robert"is still operating between Glossen, Mügeln and Oschatz.
The former main buliding of the train station is used today as a museum of regional geological specialities named Geoportal Geopark Prophyrland.

Schloss Hubertusburg Resort village close to the Wermsdorf forest with two castles: The old hunting castle which is a Renaissance building in the centre of the village, and the Hubertusburg castle, that is named the "Versailles of Saxony". Hubertusburg is an impressive baroque ensemble with a historical valuable catholic chapel. This castle gives its name to the peace of Hubertusburg, that was signed here in 1763 and ended the Sevens' Years war.

Market place of Oschatz The centre of the region with a historic city core, partially preserved city walls and the church of St. Aegidien with the apartment of the former city guard in one of the towers. The indoor swimming pool "Platsch" with a large sauna area offers sports and recreation. In 2006, the Saxon state garden show was held in Oschatz. This area is used now by the O-Schatz-Park with a small zoo and family friendly things to do.
The ruin of the castle "Osterland" is located close to Oschatz. It originates from 1211/1212.

Mildenstein castle A medieval town with the Mildenstein castle on a mountain spur above the river Freiberger Mulde. Leisnig has a picturesque old town with the city church of St. Matthäi. The former Cistercian monastery Kloster Buch is located close to the town in the floodplain of the river Mulde.
The Mildenstein castle offers a very nice museum for children and adults. It shows the history of the castle as as a former imperial castle, justice court, administrative centre of the Amt Leisnig and prison.

The city of Leipzig became important as the Saxon trade and exhibition centre. The big trade show houses with their passages still dominate the city centre. Many urban areas consist of wide-ranging, dense built quarters from the 19th century.
Cultural activities in Leipzig have been strongly influenced by the Thomaner boys' choir with its famous cantor Johann Sebastian Bach and by the Gewandhaus orchestra. Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Richard Wagner, Clara und Robert Schuhmann acted here. The peaceful revolution in the GDR started in Leipzig 1989 and finally broke down the Berlin wall.
Closely connected with the city is the zoo of Leipzig. It has been redesigned with the objective of animal well being. It is highly known for its animals living in habitats created close to their natural ones like the Pongoland, the African Savannah, and the Gondwanaland.

The city of Chemnitz was the industrial centre of Saxony and heavily destroyed in World War II. Today, buildings of well-known architects make up the downtown of Chemnitz. The district Kaßberg has been built in the period of promoterism and is considered the largest contiguous Art Nouveau quarter. Chemnitz owns remarkable art collections with work of modern art, primarily of the group "Blauer Reiter". Worth to visit are also the Museum of Natural History and, of course, the Museum of Industry.

The town hall of Döbeln Distance 20 km / driving time 25 min
The town has a historic city core of a Saxon country town. The St. Nikolai church is a late Gothic hall church. Its Döbelner high altar is a remarkable art treasure. Döbeln still has got a municipal swimming pool in the typical style of a 19th century Stadtbad. It offers swimmers and small children pools and a spacious outdoor pool for the summer.

Colditz gained importance with its stoneware production. It has an old town with winding streets and lanes. The castle of Colditzas built originally as a residence of the widows of the Electors of Saxony. Nossen with Altzella

Nossen is a very old settlement site in Saxony with a castle originating from the periode of the Renaissance. The ruins of the monastery Altzella are located in the vicinity of the town. The monastery was donated by the house of Wettin, the later Saxon kings. Therefore, it was the most important monastery complex of the country. Its ruins were integrated into a landscape park around 1800.

Rochlitzer Berg

Der The mount Rochlitz is an old volcano (altitude: 353m) with a look-out on top. The mountain was used as a quarry for decades. The impressive traces of these activities can still be found. The red Rochlitz porphyry characterizes the towns and villages in the whole area up to the Erzgebirge, because many cornices for windows and doors were made of this stone. A trail around the mountain informs about the porphyry.

A Renaissance town with the Hartenfels castle. The castle is the former residence of the Electors of Saxony, a beautiful palace built during the early Renaissance. The bridge across the river Elbe in Torgau is a historically important place. Soldier of the Red Army and the Americans met here first at the end of World War II.

Meißen was the first town founded by Germans in the country and is the cradle of Saxony. The town provides a very unique ensemble due to its location on the river Elbe, its preserved old town and the Albrechtsburg castle. Meißen is known worldwide for its porcelain.

A former Augustinian collegiate with a Romanesque basilica. The Wechselburger Lettner is one of the most important art works of the 13th century in Germany. Since 1993, Wechselburg is again an active monastery of the Benedictine Order.


Freudenstein castle Freiberg Distance 60 km / driving time 50 min
It is an old mining town, that became rich and important by silver mining. Until the 15th century, Freiberg was the mint and the banking centre of the house of Wettin. Very early, a first centre of research for mining was founded here, that is still existing as the university TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The city offers a very nice and nearly intact old town with the famous cathedral of Freiberg, the Freudenstein castle and visitor mines. One can find four organs in the cathedral, built by Gottfried Silbermann, who lived in Freiberg.
